The Pierson/Bridgehampton volleyball team, which has not lost a match since September 1, continued to build momentum toward the postseason with a 3-0 win over Stony Brook on Friday as the Lady Whalers kicked off a full slate of games for homecoming weekend.

Pierson senior Maizy Guyer had a tremendous match for the Lady Whalers and compiled 17 assists and a whopping 33 serves as the team won the first two games convincingly, 25-11 and 25-13, before holding on for a 27-25 win in the third.

“Calm and cool and just got it done,” Guyer said later. “We’re really working together. Things have just clicked.”

Pierson senior Mackenzie Benbenek had 9 serves, 9 kills and 4 aces while Leigh Hatfield had 13 serves received and 7 digs. Sophie Borzilleri had 16 serves, five of which were aces.

On September 30, Pierson scored a huge 3-2 win over Shelter Island, which has dominated the Lady Whalers in recent years in the Suffolk County Class D playoffs. Ironically, the Lady Whalers moved up to Class C this season with the addition of Bridgehampton senior Nia Dawson to the roster. Awaiting in the postseason instead of Shelter Island will be teams like Stony Brook, Port Jefferson and McGann-Mercy, teams Pierson had handled so far this season.

Mercy will host the Lady Whalers on Friday, October 14, at 4:30 p.m. and Pierson will host an invitational tournament at home on Saturday, starting at 9 a.m.

Depending on how many Class C teams qualify for the postseason, the playoffs will begin on either October 31 or November 2.
